Our Long + Winding Road

Work on our upstairs bathroom is still crawling forward.

Our vanity light search took so long

that I’m calling it the long + winding road.

Thought I had it handled,

but the light fixture I wanted cost $104-something.

G.O. nixed it + said it was too expensive.

Buzz kill!

disappointed dog

People!  The struggle is real!

Once again, it was now up to me to find something stylish + nearly free.

Let’s begin.

I love these swing arm light fixtures:

Yes, they are stylish, but wow, they’re expensive!

Everything I found + liked was in the $200 ballpark + up.

Until this happened:

Amazon has dozens that are less than $100!

See for yourself:

$49 on Amazon:

Way to go, am I right?

But wait.

I didn’t want to quarrel with G.O. about it, + what if it did look crazy!?

Long story longer.

I caved, as one does, + here’s what we bought at Menards for only $24.97!

I chose chrome because we have a chrome IKEA Runskar faucet

I love those cross handles!

But wait.

In reality, the light fixture’s chrome was so shiny,

you could see it from outer space!

No can do.

BUT WHAT NOW!?!?

I punted + decided that the light needed to be black.

We’ve got a lot of black going on in our bathroom . . .

IMG_3318

. . . + black light light fixtures + faucets are a “thing’.

The paint on modern fixtures is a matte — or flat — black . . .

black-faucet.jpg

. . . but neither our bathroom not our chrome fixture is modern.

Then I got an idea.

What about a shiny black, as in vintage porcelain shiny black, like here:

Now I’m feeling more confident!

Fast forward a bit, + here’s our glossy black light fixture,

after G.O. spray painted it glossy black:

Looks like I’ve jumped ahead to the shade portion of our light fixture saga.

As you can see, with this project,

you get to choose your fixture + your glass shade.

I narrowed the search down to two — one frosted + the other one clear.

I chose clear, because that’s what’s happening now.

Plus, the Edison-style bulbs are just fun, aren’t they?

There are other things to reveal about our bathroom,

but I shall share them at a later date.

Now you know why our light fixture search was such a long + winding road.

2 Pairs Of Lamps, Lots O’ Waiting

10 years or so ago, I bought a pair swing arm pharmacy light fixtures.

They were discontinued from Pottery Barn, for sale on eBay.

I can’t recall what I paid, but they were fairly “spendy”.

Natch, I wanted to bring them to the Dutch colonial,

but it took a while to persuade G.O.

Finally, just yesterday afternoon, they made it!

He attached them to the woodwork of the middle window of our bay,

right behind our couch.

They are taking the place of the pair of Target lamps

that were on our sofa table.

Here:

Those little Target cuties were moved to another window bay,

which is in our dining room/office/what-have-you room.

Here:

I think they look fantastic!

We have a chippy gray bench that will go on that empty side of the table.

I promise to take a snappy of it + share with the class.

I hurriedly staged this table late yesterday afternoon,

so it’s a sure bet that I am going to move things around or add stuff.

I promise to take snappies + share with the class when I do.

I shall take additional photos of our pharmacy lights in the living room, too!

Stay tuned!

Old Red V.S. New Red

Since my last blog post, BIG things have happened!

We’ve moved into the Dutch colonial!

I am SO happy!

Right now, my own pet project has been making myself a sewing studio.

I’m squeezing it inside an odd, L-shaped closet,

the space for which came from the large front staircase foyer of our house.

To amuse myself, I call my room

My Tribute To Where Women Create Magazine.

where women create magazine

If you don’t know what that means, it’s using old stuff, + lots of it!

I started with this groovy cupboard,

which used to be our house’s laundry chute.

DSC08552

Of course, I’ll blog about all this in greater detail (stay tuned!)

Today’s obsession, however, involves our new kitchen light fixtures.

At long last — we’ll have lighting over our sink!

DSC08580

I say at long last because, as is my way, I couldn’t decide!

Until this:

It’s the Logan Goose Neck outdoor wall sconce from Ballard Designs.

I loved everything about it, but the red was off.

The catalog photo didn’t look like MY red,

but after a few months, I went ahead + took the plunge.

Oh, dear.

It wasn’t the red that’s happening now.

DSC08575

It has an antique glaze brushed on it.

See for yourself:

Back in the day, during my primitive country phase,

I would have been head over heels!

My taste has evolved since then,

+ I am currently digging a more bright + clear red.

Let’s compare + contrast:

My new red is the brighter red of that spatter ware plate.

Here ’tis again in our kitchen clock:

+ yet more on these kitchen design choices:

Soon, I’ll sew something,

using 1 or more of these awesome vintage fabrics:

Yum, amIright?  Definitely stay tuned!

But back to the light fixtures’ getting their bright red makeover.

Of course, when one is me, one already has a can of red spray paint.

When one is me, one also asks G.O. to please spray paint

our brand, new light fixtures.

Oops.

surprised boy

As we speak, he is now doing this latest project for me,

+ digits crossed he’ll be able to hang those lights for me, TOday!

Stay tuned!
