Ralph Lauren’s Gas Stations

Just a few days ago,

Chloe the Dachshund + I enjoyed a walk in our city’s charming downtown,

where I imagined having my own retail store/home above.

Here:

My last possible store candidate

was this former gas station-turned-repair-garage:

DSC00006

So.  I hear what you’re saying.

You’re crazy!  What a dump!

That would be the worst possible building to re-do into a retail shop!

Or is it?

Check out this awesome Exhibit A:

ralph lauren gas station

Please.

It’s my retail idol, Ralph Lauren,

+ this is his epic gas station makeover in sunny southern California.

My pal, James, shared this photo with me.

You must read his blog, + here’s just one reason why:

You’re welcome, by the way.

But back to  my gas station hopes + dreams.

There’s even more (from Ralph Lauren)!  Exhibit B:

Let’s have a closer look-see, shall we?

ralph gas station store doors up

Please notice that the garage doors were saved

+ that they are flung open during biz hours!

When our biz hours occur after dark,

as they would for Girls Night Out or Cruise Night, we have this:

ralph gas station store at night

Admit it.  You’re feeling it, too — am I right?

Funny how a bit of online sleuthing can be so inspirational!

Speaking of which, there’s more!

This garage makeover is in Nashville, TN:

I KNOW!!!  It looks like it’s awesome!

I’ll share more tomorrow.  Stay tuned!

Crazy Retail Hopes + Dreams

Come along with Chloe the Dachshund + me

as we walk downtown + fan the fire of “Mommy’s” retail fantasies.

DSC09742

Only a few blocks from our house, we spied this charming garage:

DSC09980

How crazy is it that I’m dreaming of opening my retail store downstairs

+ creating our adorable apartment upstairs?

Okay.  That’s not going to happen.

Let’s view this darling restaurant, which was recently sold + renamed:

DSC09982

Perhaps we should have purchased said restaurant for my work/live dream,

as there is already an apartment upstairs.

Okay.  No worries.  Plan B is right next door.

A vacant lot!

DSC09983

Don’t worry, in my head, it’s already been sold — to us —

+ we’re going to build something like this:

allison ramsey store and apartment

Naturally, I’ve already selected my architect,

Allison Ramsey from Beaufort, South Carolina.

http://www.allisonramseyarchitect.com/index.cfm

So.  While my plans continue to be thwarted,

it’s good to know that someone out there is realizing their new biz dream.

That someone is opening a new restaurant,

+ from the looks of it, someone has excellent taste.

That facade + those lights rule my little world!

DSC09984

Oops.  Sorry about the trash barrel closeup!

But wait.  What’s this, next to the new restaurant space?

It  was home to a toy + hobby store, which seems to have closed.

DSC09986

That’s either going to be one huge restaurant or

one fantastic location for my new biz!

Meanwhile, there’s this:

DSC09992

It’s the 2 Basset Hounds who, coincidentally,

spend their days in the retail shop of their humans!

Chloe was very excited + insisted that we have a meet + greet.

Sorry Chloe.  Maybe next time.

Speaking of which,

next time I’ll share yet another retail hope + dream,

involving none other than my retail idol, Ralph Lauren.

And this:

Stay tuned!

Time For Outdoor Happiness

Spring’s finally arrived in northern Illinois,

+ we’ve been sprucing up our yard a bit, as one does.

Our front porch awaits its makeover,

meaning just pots of flowers but no landscaping yet.

DSC09868

I think it’s cool that we hung bunting on our in-progress porch!

Meanwhile, nothing growing out front means 1 thing:

it’s time to head to our backyard . . .

. . . where we planted 10 Autumn ferns behind the garage:

DSC09853

Our baby ferns may not look like much right now,

but soon enough, we’ll have these beauties!

fern autumn

In other news — there’s nothing like moving from house A to house B

to make a gal realize she’s got way too much garden stuff!

How many pairs of pots + urns did I think I needed?

Anyway, I did what I had to do + ruthlessly purged.

We now have a large pile of gardening goodies

that I’ll take to my next market + sell.

So what made the cut, Kay? — you’re no doubt asking.

This stuff:

DSC09879

I have had that old trellis for a long time.

It’s never looked better than here, on the garage wall!

I love the combination of chippy white paint + silvery galvanized metal!

DSC09885

That wonderful stand + bucket await their resident plant.

I am thinking something of the topiary persuasion.

Exhibit A:

topiary

DSC09884

The larger bucket to the right will soon be a fountain,

+ that sandwich board sign at left?  I love it!

I made it for my biz — several years + 2 booth spaces ago.

DSC09877

Earlier today, I drug it from its basement hide-a-way

+ plopped it here, next to our trellis + plant stand.

I’m not sure where it will land.  Stay tuned.

DSC09886

Just a few short yards from my plant stand + old sandwich board,

the garage sports this window box with 3 very rustic pots:

DSC09887

DSC09888

This year I’ve filled those pots with pretty, leafy Caladium plants,

under planted with Gin Begonias.

They are both shade tolerant, which is a must in most of our yard.

DSC09882

Next up, our pair of semi-modern Adirondack chairs

have moved from their previous place on our lawn to this patio space.

DSC09883

Somewhere there’s a pair of pale blue outdoor cushions,

+ I need to ask G.O. if he knows where they are.

Stay tuned!

Mama’s Got A Brand New Rug

Last Christmas, my sister Lisa gave me a Pottery Barn gift certificate.

After much pondering, I finally chose this cool rug:

DSC09637

Who doesn’t love navy blue ticking stripes?

As a reminder of days gone by, let’s look back at my old, much loved kilim rug:

I loved it because it had all the “Kay colors” of blue, red + buttery tan.

I bought it way, way back in 2007, so I was ready for a change.

Meanwhile, this cute little rolling table is also new:

DSC09637

I bought it for my biz, RedBird Vintage Home,

to resell at one of my upcoming spring markets.

Who knew?  It would look so great in our living room!

Check out the way the white bead board top echoes the white stripes.

So.  I may or may not sell it.  We’ll see!

DSC09640

I love how you can tell that it has been made from parts of other furniture.

The white top + apron have the best chippy patina,

while the graceful, natural wood legs surely came from something fancier.

DSC09638

And the wheels!  I’ll buy anything with wheels!

In fact, our living room has not 1 but 2 typewriter tables,

which, as you know, have wheels.

DSC09645

Sorry about the naughty photo, but it’s  been so dark + dreary here.

Anyway, I bought a sample 12″ square marble tile for the top,

yet more white in the room.

DSC09644

Now, then.  This concludes the tour of all wheeled items in our living room,

but before I go, may I show you some other newcomers to our living room?

Golf trophies!

DSC09648

My dad won those, + when we were visiting last month, he said I could have them!

I’m not sure how sentimental he is about his “major awards”,

but I promised him I wouldn’t sell them.

How could I?

DSC09637

But stay tuned for whether or not I sell my little table!

I have a market this coming Saturday.

Too Bizzy To Blog; Here’s Why

Hola!

Man, I’ve missed blogging, but here’s why I’ve been absent.

I’ve been bizzily making “stuff” like this,

using old wood salvaged from our Dutch colonial!

IMG_4363(1)IMG_4365(1)

It’s reversible!  2 X’s the fun!

It’s also currently for sale in my brick-and-mortar space, or store:

IMG_4424(1)

I call my biz REDBIRD Vintage Home,

+ I really couldn’t love anything more.

I share my space with 12 other vendors in this new-ish cool store:

Let’s have another look-see at REDBIRD.

Here I am, at left, inside my space,

with 2 of my high school classmates who visited last week!

Guess the name of our high school.

Kay – Janet – Kathy

I’ve been making + selling pillows for several years.

I have an etsy shop for them, plus 2 galleries sell them for me —

1 in Jackson Hole, WY + 1 in Los Angeles.

Lately, I’ve focused more on signs + furniture + other “stuff”.

By “other stuff”, I mean measuring sticks.

Here is a close-up of a couple:

IMG_4332(1)

Wow, all that old chippy paint — I love it!

I like to think of these as the world’s hippest growth charts

or just a cool, industrial accent.

* * *

My plans are to combine my work

with other “merch” that I order for the store,

like these glove molds from NYC:

IMG_4330(1)

. . . and this fabulous-ness from New Hampshire:

IMG_4414(1) IMG_4416(1)

Meanwhile, it’s time to view a few more of my projects!

I love the word “HOME” + opted to stencil it on this old, wooden step ladder:

IMG_4407(1)

$22

Next up, I stenciled a faded Frenchie stripe on some off-white canvas,

+ G.O. used it to reupholster this old, red metal mechanic’s stool:

IMG_4399(1)

$34 — SOLD!

This cute table was tricked out in a Swedish kind of way:

IMG_4282(1)

Check out how I lined those drawers.

It’s old Mary Emmerling wallpaper from a recent past bathroom of ours!

IMG_4288(1)

SOLD!

A pub table turned a little British with its stylized Union Jack top:

IMG_4269(1)

. . . and a couple more vintage items received their RedBird crosses:

So.  What’s going on over at the Dutch colonial? — you ask?

IMG_4347(1)

THE SIDING IS DONE!

Next up (soon!): tricking out THAT PORCH!

Stay tuned!

RedBird Retail, The Sequel!

People.

I am beyond pleased that my fabulous BFF, Stacey,

asked me to join her equally fab, new antiques shop venture,

TRUE NORTH!

And now, here’s the before pic of the new antiques store:

And now, here’s the awesome TRUE NORTH after!

(If you look closely, you can tell which space is mine:)

Yesh, of course, it’s the one with the RedBird sandwich board!

I have a $150 price tag on it for now.

Everything’s for sale, so this can be yours for ‘only’ $150! Any takers?

As per usual, G.O. helped me set up my space.

Just look!  There he is now!

IMG_2999(1)

Okay, so it would be a stretch to say that my new ‘project’ has him this happy,

but I do think that he’s having a good time.

Here’s one tall, handsome reason why:

IMG_3000(1)

It’s Stacey’s fabulous husband, Erik

a.k.a. “E.O.”

(I’m so not kidding — that is his nickname!)

G.O. + E.O. are the 2 halves of a super swell bromance,

so it’s win win for Stacey + Kay!

 * * *

But I digress.

Back to my new shop:

In progress!

In progress!

IMG_3354(1)

Ready for opening day!

Speaking of opening day, I sold not 1 but 2 large pieces of furniture!

IMG_2999(1)

I’ll post more pics later; ’tis time for me to stencil something.

Don’t forget!  https://www.facebook.com/shoptruenorth
