A Simple Christmas Porch

This afternoon I snapped just a few photos of our pretty new porch,

decorated very simply for Christmas time.

IMG_2892

We bought those black urns at Lowe’s this past summer,

+ of course, at the time,

I was already dreaming of how pretty they would look at Christmas.

IMG_2894

They look like cast iron but are actually made from old tires,

which means they are lightweight + are supposed to be durable enough

to make it throughout the cold winter months.

IMG_2898

Each window in our house has a single electric candle,

which is one of my favorite things to do.

I think it is so quaint, especially in a 2-story house like ours

(+ this one, below:)

We hung some artificial garland made of mixed greens,

including some blue spruce,

which coordinates divinely with our blue spruce topiary.

IMG_2741

Yes, I know this Dachshund is tacky, but how could I resist so much cuteness?

IMG_2905

She’s standing in front of my seats from the old Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

IMG_2907

I bought that ginormous wreath at a garage sale one warm summer day.

It’s hard to tell in this photo, but those are big, retro red bulbs.

IMG_2907

Yes, I use a lot of red in our house, which is especially festive at Christmas time.

Did I share a photo of our new mailbox?

IMG_2901

IMG_2911

Look!  Yet another Dachshund — a boot  scraper, actually,

which I placed next to some old, red boots I bought at a vintage store.

IMG_2902

This may or may not be the final version of our Christmas porch,

but whatever — I am going to keep things simple, with red + greens.

Post-Christmas Paring Down

Funny thing.

This November found me a little down in the dumps.

To try + boost my morale a bit, I opted to decorate for Christmas earlier than usual.

Exhibit A:

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER:

I totally know that Dachshund Santa is tacky, but how could I resist?

He’s almost as cute as Chloe the Dachshund!

img_0112

Everything else is vintage + simple + natural, so I tell myself that things get balanced.

Exhibit B:

img_0114

I’m keeping those darling vintage pitchers + tiny bottle brush trees out for a while.

Look!  There’s Chloe’s predecessor, Susie the Dachshund,

with our very young, very adorable grandlad (who’s now 11.5!)

img_0115

But I digress.  Back to my holiday decor.

Away it all went, almost the minute Christmas was over.

How unlike me, Queen of Procrastinators!

But isn’t it always great to see how spare the house looks after the holidays?

Take our sorter + art ledges.  Please.

You might recall that I was inspired by this photo to turn my books around:

I really like the way it keeps things looking a little less busy,

so my books are staying turned around, at least for now.

img_0106

I also purged about half the stuff that had been on my art ledges:

img_0105

They look great!

I hung our vintage map of Illinois on the front of the sorter:

img_0133

We bought it at a pop-up antiques market in Grand Central Station

during our first visit to NYC.

img_0134

Among all this paring down, perhaps you noticed one new item in our living room.

It’s an ottoman!

img_0124

I’ve had it about 20 years or so.

It came with a matching chair + 1/2 (a.k.a. “Grandmother’s chair”),

which I sold about 10 years ago.

Its new upholstery will be a heavy horse blanket I’ve had forever, too.

img_0126

I think it adds yet more texture + a little pattern to our room.

My plans are to attach it with some off-white twill tape + dozens of upholstery tacks.

(Sooner than later, I hope.)  I told you I was the Queen of Procrastinators!

Stay tuned!

Crazy Retail Hopes + Dreams

Come along with Chloe the Dachshund + me

as we walk downtown + fan the fire of “Mommy’s” retail fantasies.

DSC09742

Only a few blocks from our house, we spied this charming garage:

DSC09980

How crazy is it that I’m dreaming of opening my retail store downstairs

+ creating our adorable apartment upstairs?

Okay.  That’s not going to happen.

Let’s view this darling restaurant, which was recently sold + renamed:

DSC09982

Perhaps we should have purchased said restaurant for my work/live dream,

as there is already an apartment upstairs.

Okay.  No worries.  Plan B is right next door.

A vacant lot!

DSC09983

Don’t worry, in my head, it’s already been sold — to us —

+ we’re going to build something like this:

allison ramsey store and apartment

Naturally, I’ve already selected my architect,

Allison Ramsey from Beaufort, South Carolina.

So.  While my plans continue to be thwarted,

it’s good to know that someone out there is realizing their new biz dream.

That someone is opening a new restaurant,

+ from the looks of it, someone has excellent taste.

That facade + those lights rule my little world!

DSC09984

Oops.  Sorry about the trash barrel closeup!

But wait.  What’s this, next to the new restaurant space?

It  was home to a toy + hobby store, which seems to have closed.

DSC09986

That’s either going to be one huge restaurant or

one fantastic location for my new biz!

Meanwhile, there’s this:

DSC09992

It’s the 2 Basset Hounds who, coincidentally,

spend their days in the retail shop of their humans!

Chloe was very excited + insisted that we have a meet + greet.

Sorry Chloe.  Maybe next time.

Speaking of which,

next time I’ll share yet another retail hope + dream,

involving none other than my retail idol, Ralph Lauren.

And this:

Powder Room Finishing Touches — Part 1

.On Friday I multitasked by filling my old sorter with books + things,

DSC08249

while supervising the finishing touches in our powder room:

DSC08233

That curvy mirror once belonged to a dresser that we sold.

DSC08223

I love its beveled edges + pretty natural wood frame.

That pendant light is from Pottery Barn:

I bought it a long time ago for over the kitchen sink in our brick bungalow.

DSC08228

I love its brown cloth-covered cord + fluted white glass shade.

DSC08229

I found the sweet vintage shelf on etsy.

It has the prettiest shade of chippy, pale blue paint!

DSC08225

That’s on old photo of me, at age 3 or 4, with our beloved pet Beagle, Scamp.

.Fast forward several years, + here’s my current beloved pet,

Chloe the Dachshund!

DSC08230

Disclaimer: there will soon be a threshold at the intersection of the 2 tile floors.

Thanks for reading — I’ll post yet more powder room photos soon.

Stay tuned!
