RANGE HOOD, PLAN B

Many, if not all, of our Dutch colonial projects

start at Plan A but end up at Plan B, or Plan C, or beyond . . .

Take our range hood.  Please.

The tape marks the size + location of our Plan A,

which we carefully planned + about which I recently blogged.

G.O. was going to build ours with wood, painted white.

Here is our inspiration:

We soon realized that this was a way more complicated

+ time-consuming project than we had anticipated.

Our Plan A quickly switched to Plan B!

Here it is — the Datid range hood from IKEA:

I love those decorative rails very much

+ have long wanted this hood for my own kitchen.

Its cost, $679, was more than we wanted to spend,

but sometimes, these things can’t be helped.

Yes, even though it’s quite perfect,

I still wished to tweak the design just a bit.

Since our kitchen appliances are white with stainless accents,

img_0331

I asked G.O. to spray paint the body of our new hood white,

leaving the decorative apron + rails stainless.

(Please notice our white + stainless dishwasher in the background.)

I am very anxious to see this final bit of kitchen FINISHED,

at long last.

I’ll keep you all posted, so stay tuned!

OMiGosh! Range Hood!

Since I’ve been doing so much nesting this winter,

things are looking better + better inside the Dutch colonial.

Yay!

However, the more we do in all those other rooms,

the more I dislike our unfinished kitchen!

I can’t stand it!

Calm down.  We’re finally on our way.

We’re finally getting a range hood!

First thing I do is head to Pinterest to find something that I really love.

Found it!

range-hood-chippy-paint-with-scallops

HA!  So funny!

Maybe I should have said “something that both G.O. + I like!”

Perhaps this one?

range-hood-pretty-steel-with-scallops

Oops!

It may be a tad more mainstream, but those pesky scallops!

I fear G.O. would snap, + we can’t have that.

Now, this is more like it!

range-hood-one-i-like-stainless

I love the chunky design, but not in stainless.  I want white.

This next one is similar:

We both agree that the wood is too rustic for our kitchen.

Could this be the one?

range-hood-one-we-will-do-2

YES IT COULD!  (With a little tweaking, that is!)

Anyway, once the design was finally chosen,

it was time for us to break out our trusty blue masking tape

+ start marking out the hood’s location on the wall:

img_0243

OMiGosh, you guys!

Just having the tape up there makes our kitchen look better!

I immediately barked out instructions for G.O. to find + order

the actual range hood machine thing, or whatever it’s called.

Just a sec.  Let me check on that.

He sez he hasn’t yet.

Maybe tomorrow, if I bark more instructions?

Stay tuned!

Fixer Upper + Me + Scallops

I’m going to assume that if you read my blog,

you also watch HGTV’s Fixer Upper show.

You also love just about everything that they do,

especially the transformation of the exterior of this house:

Wouldn’t you know it,

there are so many before houses  in our town’s new-house neighborhood.

No offense, homeowners, but it’s kind of a buzz kill

when we’re riding around, looking at houses, as one does.

But let’s turn our frowns upside-down!

Let’s go inside this beautiful home , for another major LIKE by me.

Look at that darling white children’s table.

Can you guess?

We have an ottoman that’s just like this, so stay tuned!

I rest my case.

Reclaimed Lumber Beam + Range Hood

A few days ago, I was complaining that our kitchen looks “too new”

+ that a nice box beam made from old lumber would be just the ticket.

Not long after I started searching for said lumber,

our neighbors down the alley began tearing down their old garage!

How fortunate for us, no?

Here’s G.O. sorting through the pile o’ wood:

Next, we loaded our boards into G.O.’s Ranchero:

And back home:

Yes, our new/old boards will make a fantastic box beam

between our kitchen + dining room:

But wait.  There’s more!

We’re going to need a range hood for over our new range!

As often happens, my mind started racing toward a new project,

+ it wasn’t much later that I was searching Pinterest

for photos of wood range hoods!

Like this:

G.O. wasn’t on board at first,

as he thought maybe a wood range hood would be too “rustic”.

I feel his pain, but all these kitchens look kind of like ours,

meaning it would look just fine!

While searching for old wood range hoods,

I found this metal one that I couldn’t love more!

Midwest Living magazine Oh, how I love scallops! And their old stove, the shelf, + the marble subway tiles!

But I digress, just a bit.

Back to my range hood hopes + dreams.

I’ll think + plan + sketch like crazy, so stay tuned!

Range Hood Hopes + Dreams

Lately I’ve been having the most fun,

planning the range hood for our Dutch colonial kitchen.

In our current hacienda, we have one of these restaurant-style hoods from IKEA:

range hood from IKEAAt the time  (6 or 7 years ago — I can’t remember),

I thought this was so daring + cutting edge!  HA!

I was too scared to spring it on  share my plans with G.O.

so I waited until we were IN the kitchen dept. at IKEA, ordering cabs!

Cue: his “I’m displeased” face.

IMG_1395(1)

Poor G.O.!

Thankfully for me, the IKEA girlie was on my side

+ talked him down from the ledge

persuaded him that it would look cool!

* * * *

But please.  While I do amuse myself with this anecdote,

I’m also rolling my eyes just a bit,

as I am no longer burdened by fear!

I just point to the bozoputer + show G.O. what I want,

wait for him to loudly veto my idea (as is his way),

+ then proceed as planned.

People.  He’s going to end up liking it.  Trust me.

 * * * *

But I digress again.

Re: range hoods!

I’d be so bored if we had the same range hood in the Dutch colonial,

so it’s OUT with the stainless steel + the restaurant styling,

+ onward to plan B!

Here’s plan B:

IMG_2876(1)

That range hood is my interpretation of this:

range hood -- straight #2 -- houzz

houzz.com

Notice that it’s just a plain Jane box that’s been trimmed out

in a Shaker style, similar to the IKEA cabs we’ll be using:

IKEA white cabs -- solid door

Winning!

What’s cool is G.O. can make this for practically free!

Here’s another, this time with a slightly slanted front face:

absolute black granite #4

houzz.com

Nobody loves a glossy bead board kitchen ceiling more than I do.

(Riddle me this: HOW can I persuade G.O. that we ‘need’ a vintage stove?)

* * * *

But I digress yet again.  Back to the range hoods.

My plans include tricking things out just a tad,

with some small brackets + a shelf, just like this:

range hood straight #4 -- jennie hunt

YUM!

Okay, so now I’m majorly obsessing about blue transfer ware platters.

Excuse me while I head to etsy + madly search for said-same.

Seriously.  You can find almost anything on etsy.  Check it out!

Stay tuned!
