Do I Have Too Much Stuff?

Lately, I have been longing for a less-is-more house,

so my filled-to-the-brim postal sorter may soon be a thing of the past.

I purchased it in the early 90’s to display my merch in my old retail store,

Heart in Hand.

Here it is in our most recent past house — the brick bungalow,

where it served as a humongous TV stand:

In our current house, the Dutch colonial,

it’s on a wall in the dining room, just across from our table.

Here you can see how the dining room is open to our kitchen.

G.O. added a beam where the two rooms meet,

+ my beloved St. Louis bus station sign is hanging there:

The trunks underneath the sorter are filled with fabric + pillow forms + blankets:

While up on top, I’m displaying my small bird house collection:

We bought this chippy blue metal house last Fall:

I think I love chippy red metal just as much as blue.

I bought this small birdhouse in a store about 20 years ago:

My friend gave me the white bird house years ago:

Come Spring, this trio will head outside, for mostly decorative purposes.

As much as I love birds, I kind of hate to attract them

as a murderous cat named Patty lives just next door.

Meanwhile, the rest of my sorter is full of more of my treasures,

including this sweet, little pitcher that I bought in Soho, NYC:

This lighthouse nightlight was originally our grandparents’,

then our late sister, Kathy, had it for years.

It obviously took a tumble in the past, + G.O. sez he’ll re-glue it for me.

IMG_3689

I bought the pair of black urns from Lowe’s a few years back,

+ the faux plants are from IKEA.

I have a yen to put them on our front porch steps — maybe later today.

I love my heavy glass vessel from Pottery Barn, bought years ago;

currently, it displays a collection of old baseballs:

IMG_3703

Speaking of baseballs, here’s one signed by the great Brooks Robinson.

(Hall of Fame 3rd baseman for the Baltimore Orioles)

How lucky I am, to have these old golf trophies of my dad’s!

I collect the Guy Wolff pots, + this one is from the late, great Smith + Hawken.

Coincidentally, this pot is resting on my Smith + Hawken garden book!

Well, that’s about it.

I guess you’d never suspect me of wanting to go less-is-more, would you?

We’ll see — stay tuned!

Our Pretty, Simple Fall Porch

All the popular kids are posting tours of their Autumnal homes,

so that means I will, too

Here’s a little something from inside our house:

IMG_2101

I’ve had that old lattice for years,

+ this was the first time that we’ve displayed it indoors.

I love the way its colors complement the gray of our walls!

Now, then.  Let’s go outside + see what’s happening on that new porch of ours:

Gone are summer’s hot pink caladiums + vivid green sweet potato vines:

IMG_1941

In their place is this urn filled with ornamental grasses,

which are at their peak in Fall:

These pretty blue flowers were near the back porch.

They were so pretty, I thought I’d share them out front.

Sadly, I misplaced their tags,

but I do remember that they are some sort of morning glory!

A terra cotta pot is temporarily our mail box,

as the one we chose from amazon is back-ordered:

IMG_2118

So much for the summer plants — the right side of our steps is devoted to Fall!

G.O. brought home some pumpkins the other day,

+ I popped the 2 white ones into my vintage yellow ware bowls.

IMG_2131

Disclaimer: one of my friends said that I was being “brave”,

having the bowls out front, so I have since moved them indoors.

I’ll share soon!

For now, let’s get back to those steps of ours:

Another pair of pumpkins are inside our 2 small black urns.

The sweet mums in a basket

are the tiny ones that Home Depot has every September:

Well, that’s about it for our Fall décor on the porch.

told you it was simple!

My display at our last house, the brick bungalow, was a bit more “busy”:

fall at the bungalow steps

fall at the bungalow steps with tin bucket

fall at the bungalow trellis box up close

Those pansies + that ornamental kale are so cute!

Who knows?  Maybe I’ll get some if I see them,

+ use them to augment our simple display!

Stay tuned!

Our Dining Room Gets Its FALL On!

I recently came home with a carload of mums, kale, pansies + pumpkins,

+ next, I added FALL to our front porch!

It was such a huge morale boost that I opted to do something similar inside!

I started with our dining room:

This pair of black urns with the white pumpkins

were flanking our front door, just this morning!

Now they are looking swell inside, accessorizing our pine farmhouse table:

I have had this old Rockford, Illinois wooden box for years:

Why yes, I DO love red stripes!

KATHY + CINDEE oil painting by me, graduate school, 1978

Our bungalow doesn’t have a lot of wall space for large canvases like this,

so I’m using a vintage wooden easel to display my painting.

Here’s a similar look from Ellen Degeneres’ house:

Back to our house — here’s a close-up of that accent wall.

G.O. + I stenciled it together, + we love it!

IMG_1792(1)

That pretty wall color — Beeswax — is so warm,

+ it happens to match all the yellow ware that I love to collect.

Here are my tin quilt stencils, marching across the hallway door:

Don’t you love our art ledges?  I do.

G.O. made them with an old door casing from our house:

I like them because I can switch things out whenever I please.

G.O. likes them because we’re not driving 100’s of nails into our walls!

Right now, I’ve got a lot of fall stuff displayed with photos + artwork.

Yumm-O for our orange mercury glass votive cups:

Some old glass ware for some sparkle, inside a handmade basket:

Our dad caught this foul ball at a Cardinals game in the 50’s:

Next up: our living room gets its Autumnal make over!

Stay tuned!
