Earlier this week, I posted my musings about this week’s Fixer Upper episode
on my biz Facebook page.
I’m happy to report that it garnered a lot of interest, which I love!
Fans of the show recognize this project
as what I named the retro / West Elm re-do for Joanna’s sister + family.
Nailed it!
That couch can be found at West Elm.
Same. Exact. Couch.
HAMILTON
I could fling aside those back cushions + spoon with my Dachshund.
And, that color of leather is such a favorite that I named it.
Baseball glove brown.
Please. Why do you think my business is called Red Bird Vintage Home?
Anyway, yes, I do love West Elm,
although some of my FB besties said they thought it was too modern.
Oops.
Never fear, though — even I had a slight issue (imagine that),
+ proclaimed that this particular open concept, while stunning,
skews a tad too “gymnasium” for me.
Don’t get me wrong — I embrace an open concept as much as the next person,
but this had me pondering how one achieves one more to my liking.
Off to Pinterest I dashed, as one does,
+ I saw some awesome photos of beautiful, open plans.
This is nearly as open as the errant gym plan,
but the small wing walls + beautiful arch visually create some separation.
Next method — CASE OPENINGS
Once again, this is very open, but the woodwork says,
“I am a separate room!“
Here’s my fave version:
Isn’t it amazing what a little molding can do?
Next version: ISLAND COLUMNS
Is it just me, or does every homeowner on HGTV desire the open concept?
Seems like 99% of them end up spending $1,000’s on a huge beam
to keep the second story from crashing down.
I gotta ask why? — when a couple of columns on one’s island do the trick,
+ looking FABULOUS while doing so!
Exhibit B:
Surprise! Here’s a pair of columns in a kitchen designed by Joanna Gaines!
The decorative brackets add a lot of charm, don’t they?
And in conclusion, what on earth did we do before Pinterest?

Ooh, I’m not a huge fan of modern, but that sofa rocks! I love your ideas. Yes to the volumnsI definitely will have to check our West Elm. It looks like a place where I could spend a lot of time (and $$!).
January 6th, 2018 at 11:20 am
Pat, I love that couch + think it would fit in perfectly with just about any style of decor.
January 5th, 2018 at 7:06 pm
Agree with Kay. Love the open concept look, but also prefer the columns, along with the crown moldings that Fixer Upper has used on many other projects, which allow for open concept, yet define the different spaces. It’s less expensive, plus warms up the entire space. Gymnasium spaces belong in the gym, in my opinion.

To be fair, Joanna was re-doing the house for her sister who loves modern. I like that she added that teal color throughout the house, too, as that is her sister’s favorite.
January 5th, 2018 at 7:17 pm
Loved reading this over coffee this noon!
Kay, I Always enjoy the way you write and present photos! I’m a combo open vs cozy floor plan kinda girl.
January 6th, 2018 at 11:22 am
Joy, thanks for the compliment. I am thinking of your house, which has a semi open concept.
January 5th, 2018 at 7:40 pm
I love any room that has a mix of styles…cozy country…modern…a touch of retro…a smidgeon of traditional…it all works. In the end it needs to reflect the home owner. Since I sell vintage for a living, mine tends to lean toward a bit of farmhouse and cottage with some traditional flare ups. Because I live in a 1977 boring ranch, I’d give my eye teeth to have a huge room like those pictured…so I could add another big hutch to my collection…and lounge on an 8′ long Chesterfield!!!!
January 5th, 2018 at 10:23 pm
Ha ha ha! Flare ups, indeed!
January 5th, 2018 at 8:28 pm
Great post, as always! That couch is amazing!!! It looks buttery-soft and the lines are perfect. Hmmm…could be a thought for our basement remodel. Thank you!
January 6th, 2018 at 11:23 am
Tina, I couldn’t agree with your couch comment more. Something that simple would fit into many types of decor. TY for the compliment, too!
January 5th, 2018 at 8:53 pm
Yes, West Elm has the most scrumptious leather pieces, and I recognized the sofa in the latest Fixer Upper!
I vote for the pillars or some time of designation of the spaces–unless it’s a loft in some great warehouse district!
And what did we do before Pinterest? Well I had binders all all my favorites rooms and things in binders!
January 5th, 2018 at 10:24 pm
Omigosh, I had binders, too! Filled to the brim with magazine clippings! Thanks for that trip down memory lane!
January 5th, 2018 at 9:39 pm
Of course, a great blog! I love all of your work! ❤️
January 5th, 2018 at 10:37 pm
Who’s nicer than you?
January 5th, 2018 at 10:00 pm
Love those columns!!
January 5th, 2018 at 10:02 pm
P.S.
Love that couch too!😊
January 6th, 2018 at 11:07 am
I want that couch in that leather or a pair of chairs in said same. We have a cat who would shred it to smithereens, though. 😦
January 6th, 2018 at 11:24 am
Me, too, re: the columns.
January 6th, 2018 at 12:40 am
Informative and fun, as always! We are also looking to open up the space between our kitchen/dining and living room and I’m now seriously considering keeping some structure between the two. Hmm… perhaps you should take a look and give us some advice?!
January 6th, 2018 at 11:02 am
Marnie, my head spins with possibilities! TY for the compliment!
January 6th, 2018 at 12:59 pm
These amazing, enormous gymnasium kitchens/living rooms that cost a fortune so people can eat take out, lol! Confession though, we will probably be making our kitchen larger in the future. I like the columns on the island, thanks for sharing the idea!
January 6th, 2018 at 9:38 pm
Jill, ha ha! Take out! That’s about right. Good look with your kitchen re-do. I can’t wait to see it!
January 6th, 2018 at 1:37 pm
We have been considering the arch in our two openings to the kitchen. Also playing with the idea of wood beams to add the element of wood. We will have to wait and see!!!
January 6th, 2018 at 5:32 pm
I wish to go back in time + create an arched opening in our most previous house, the brick bungalow. Isn’t it enough that I am planning this re-do? It’s all fun! Good luck with your projects!
January 7th, 2018 at 4:10 am
We added a beam to the ceiling between our open kitchen + dining room. It just visually separates the room, I thought.
January 6th, 2018 at 2:09 pm
Adam always makes a joke that if we played a drinking game while watching House Hunters or really anything on HGTV and we took a drink every time someone said “open concept” we’d be drunk by the end of the episode. Also, I love that buttery leather sofa and you nailed it with the color description. Looks just like a broken in baseball glove ❤️
January 6th, 2018 at 5:27 pm
How about when they say “for entertaining? Everybody always entertains a lot.

I loved having a shop!
January 7th, 2018 at 4:09 am
Thanks, Jessica! That’s nice to hear.
January 6th, 2018 at 6:31 pm
I too miss your shop! But I will put on my big girl panties and be brave!!! Oh, I love the Brick wall in A and the farm sink In B!
January 7th, 2018 at 4:08 am
Debi, ha! You’re so cute!
January 6th, 2018 at 6:39 pm
I love looking at your posts. Wish your creativity rubbed off on me!
January 7th, 2018 at 4:08 am
TY, Lesley! I don’t know how creative I am — maybe it’s more obsession!
January 6th, 2018 at 8:32 pm
Agee on the gymnasium… I like modern and there’s a lot of good in that space, but it feels aggressively geometric to me. I lurve the columns on the island – a beautiful and functional solution that adds character and charm. Nice post Kay!
January 7th, 2018 at 4:07 am
Thanks so much, Amy!
January 6th, 2018 at 8:51 pm
Darling Pillows!!!!!❤️
January 7th, 2018 at 4:06 am
Thank you, Sandra!
January 6th, 2018 at 9:51 pm
I LOVE the open look! That is something we will never have with our old home but sure would love it!
Love your blog, Kay!
January 7th, 2018 at 4:06 am
Thank you, Karen!
January 6th, 2018 at 10:11 pm
Love it. Love your posts
January 7th, 2018 at 4:03 am
Thanks, Wendy!
January 6th, 2018 at 10:49 pm
I think this is a little too modern for me, but adore the kitchen and the sink is awesome!!
Also I ❤️❤️❤️❤️Your gingham pillows!
January 7th, 2018 at 12:57 pm
TY, Karla
January 7th, 2018 at 4:17 am
I, too, prefer the open concept with some definition between the separate spaces. For me. However, I have always thought that a designer keeps their client in mind during the design.
January 8th, 2018 at 11:45 am
Exactly, Sandy. Joanna totally did this re-do for her sister, + I noticed her (Joanna’s) little cry of joy as they first stepped inside. Sweet!
January 7th, 2018 at 4:20 am
Enjoy your blog! Before Pinterest? I had a 3 ring binder that I would put magazine clippings in, just HOPING that one day I would have that design! And boy, has the designs changed since then! Haha!
January 8th, 2018 at 11:46 am
Jodi, ha — tell me about change. I look back at my former houses + kind of shudder. Even the retail shop I had + loved so much at the time. Change is good, isn’t it?
January 7th, 2018 at 4:25 am
I love Fixer Upper but this was not my fav Joanna design. However, she was designing it for her sister who loved it, and that’s what is important.
January 8th, 2018 at 11:48 am
At first, I thought that the kitchen back splash was blue, so i was really on board! What did you think of that dry-stacked tile (no grout) in the bathroom? I’m on the fence.
January 7th, 2018 at 4:34 am
I love the case opening rooms. They are all very beautiful!
The only issue with the open concept is.. if I’m using the mixer, running the dishwasher, etc.. it annoys the family watching tv. Lol
The pillows are so cute!
January 8th, 2018 at 11:51 am
Ha, Jody! I never thought about the noise factor! TY for the pillow compliment!
January 7th, 2018 at 7:00 pm
Our old home is now open concept and unfortunately when the previous owner (my mother and stepdad) made it open concept they didn’t fully support the second floor the way they should have. Lol. Enter us. We bought the home and installed LVL beams to fully support the upper floor. In doing so, we added two arches, one that separates the kitchen from living room and one that separates the living room from dining area. We love it now.
I love your blog. You have excellent taste and it’s been fun following along as you redo your home.
January 8th, 2018 at 11:53 am
TY, Stephanie! Wow, you really averted a disaster! The arches sound fantastic! TY for following my blog!
January 7th, 2018 at 7:09 pm
I love all the fixtures so my taste we are house hunting and staging our own house great style!
January 8th, 2018 at 11:54 am
TY for the compliment, Ann! Good luck house hunting!
January 7th, 2018 at 7:12 pm
Love all of this!!! I look forward to catching up on your blog!
January 9th, 2018 at 12:09 am
Carol, thanks! I’m glad you’ll be reading my blog!
January 8th, 2018 at 4:54 am
Gymnasium look. That’s a new one for me but I guarantee you it will be added to my vocabulary. Loved your post.
January 8th, 2018 at 11:35 am
Thanks, Donna! I like using odd, weird, whatever words!
